West Australian studmaster Graham Daws is no stranger to success with Vinery sires and he’s bred a very promising one by Star Turn named Perusal.

Perusal looked a class act winning the Growmaster Maiden Plate (1415m) second-up at Sale on Thursday.  “We’re thrilled with that performance,” trainer Matt Laurie said.  “He handled the awkward barrier perfectly to slide forward and sit comfortably just off the pace.

“He has a natural turn of foot and that was on show in the straight as he kicked away to score by over a length eased down.”

Winning jockey Ethan Brown was also keen to credit Perusal as a horse with a future.  “He’s still a bit raw but we’ve been getting the work into him.  His class prevailed today from the tricky gate.  He dropped his head and travelled beautifully.  We probably got to the front a bit early but he levelled out and looks ready to take the next step.”

Perusal is the first foal out of Tiffany’s (High Chaparral) who won up to 2200m at Ellerslie for trainers Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman.  “I purchased Tiffany’s off the track but my only foal from her was Perusal,” Daws recalled.  “It’s a very strong pedigree and the New Zealanders bought her back off me when her half-brother Ping Hai Star won the 2018 Hong Kong Derby.”

Perusal was a $30,000 buy for Laurie from Dawson Stud at the 2020 Perth Magic Millions and you can already add a zero and more to his current value.  The Mornington trainer spotted him a year after purchasing Group 1 Oakleigh Plate winner Portland Sky for $85,000 in the Swan Valley.

Daws was also in the syndicate that purchased All Too Hard filly Temptacion from Vinery Stud (as agent) for $300,000 at the 2019 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  She won three races up to 1800m at Ascot and was also placed in the 2021 WA Derby (Gr.2, 2400m) and WA Oaks (Gr.3, 2400m).

Now not far from a maiden cover at stud, Temptacion has resounding residual value as a full-sister to Outrageous (ATC Festival Stakes Gr.3) and a half-sister to Very Tempting (WA Oaks Gr.3).  Their dam Fit And Ready (More Than Ready) is a half-sister to Catbird (ATC Golden Slipper Stakes Gr.1).

Meanwhile, Star Turn unearthed a new-season 3yo with ability when Athena Nyx won a Wyong trial in second-gear on Wednesday.  The unraced filly is trained by Kris Lees for Premium Thoroughbreds after graduating from Vinery’s draft to the 2021 Inglis Classic Sale for $90,000.

Athena Nyx’s dam Night War (General Nediym) won a Karrakatta Plate (Gr.2, 1200m) in Perth and is four-from-four at stud with winners by All Too Hard (3) and Press Statement.

Star Turn was an across-the-board Australian Top 5 second-season stallion in 2021-22 and he stands for a $27,500 fee (inc GST) at Vinery.  For bookings or further information, please contact Adam White (0414 800 918) or Harry Roach (0401 970 006).
