Exciting Ole Kirk two-year-old Aerodrome made it two wins from as many starts when taking out the Claredon Stakes (1400m) at Newcastle’s stand-alone Metropolitan meeting on Saturday.
Trained by Michael Freedman at Randwick, Aerodrome justified his favouritism by producing a tough win under the guidance of jockey Regan Bayliss.
He was quickly away from barrier five, driving through the field to settle behind the leader, two off the rail. On straightening, Bayliss got to work and the gelding responded by looming up at the 150m mark and pulling away to win by just under a length.
“He went a lot straighter today and also showed that good will to win like he did first up,” said Bayliss post-race.
“He’s a lovely horse and he’s just going to keep improving and I think the more runs we get into him and the more he steps up in trip, he’s going to keep getting better and better and not sure if the heavy ground was to his liking today, being such a big striding horse, but he found a way to get the job done today and he’s got a bright future.”
Aerodrome was a $190,000 yearling purchase from the 2024 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale for Nine9Park. He’s the first foal of Epaulette mare She Shao Fly, a winner of the Group 3 South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Ole Kirk currently maintains a clean sweep of Australia’s First Season Sire Table, leading on prizemoney, winners, Stakes winners and wins. He will stand the 2025 breeding season for a fee of $99,000 including GST.
