Turning won like a good thing at Gosford’s stand-alone meeting on Saturday to confirm claims he’s turned the corner for trainer Kim Waugh.

The 4yo son of Star Turn took advantage of textbook Brad Rawiller ride to defeat Diamond Diesel (Mossman) and Eye See Things (Star Witness) when appearing second-up after an eight-month spell.

“I was confident when he settled off the fence one-one,” Waugh said following the $120,000 Midway Hcp (1200m).  “Brad got things under control after he over-raced out of the gates and it was an impressive win.”

Turning had won his maiden as a July 2yo at Muswellbrook and followed with 3yo wins at Taree and Newcastle before breaking through in town as a spring 4yo at Canterbury last September.

“He was unlucky first-up at Randwick last month.,” Waugh added. “J-Mac got off and said he should have won.  We’ve always known he was talented.  He was green early on but was good enough to win some while still learning.  It’s a shame Brad’s going back to Melbourne.  He’s a very good rider and we’ve enjoyed a lot of luck together while he’s been up here.”

The chunky sprinter was presented in magnificent order for a large syndicate managed by Mark Waugh.  He was bred and sold by Fairview Stud’s Ian and Linda Duckworth for $70,000 at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

Turning’s dam Miskish (Fastnet Rock) won twice in Sydney and her half-brother Nan Tien won at Listed level in a Carrington Stakes and Lightning Stakes at Randwick.  Her final foal Miscavolini (Written By) was placed in 2yo trials for Bjorn Baker at Rosehill and Warwick Farm in February.

The Star Turn – Fastnet Rock cross has an 83% success-rate and among them is fellow 4yo Astrologer who was sold to Hong Kong after winning a Canterbury nursery for Snowden Racing.  The latest of his four wins since the move was for trainer Pierre Ng at Happy Valley in February.

Star Turn sired 9 individual winners in April and started this month with Eagle Hawk Star in the Ladbrokes Hcp (1200m) at his home track on Friday night.  He’s another promising 4yo and is two-for-two for trainer Greg Eurell at Cranbourne.
