Vinery sire Headwater is off to another successful start to the spring carnivals with 14 individual winners leading into last weekend.
Headwater’s promising 4yo stallion Manhood notched No.14 with ease at the Gold Coast on Friday. Starting an odds-on favourite, despite the steadier of 61kg, he was unchallenged to make it three wins in four starts this campaign.
After his sole defeat, trainer Annabel Neasham added blinkers plus a tongue-tie and that made all the difference in the Eva Gordon MVP Hcp (1200m). He crossed the field and came back under Brodie Loy before breezing home with something in reserve.
“We’ve got a lot of time for Manhood,” assistant-trainer Todd Pollard said from Neasham’s Gold Coast satellite stable. “The blinkers helped on Friday. He hit a flat spot when just beaten at Doomben last time. He was well and truly headed that day but kicked back and only went down in the last stride. Full credit to the horse and will keep going through the grades this season.”
Manhood was a $35,00 buy for his previous trainer Michael Costa at the 2020 Inglis Classic Sale. He was bred by Pedrille Bloodstock’s Bob Hansberry and is the first foal of My Miss Pedrille (Lonhro) who is a full-sister to ATC Chelmsford Stakes (Gr.2, 1600m) winner O’Lonhro.
Second-dam Mamzelle Pedrille (Zoffany) was a top-class mare winning 7 Stakes races in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Group 2 company in the STC Theo Marks Hcp at Rosehill.
Meanwhile, Headwater’s top-class Group 2 mare Jamaea has several spring options after breaking through $1million in prizemoney with a first-up second in the Toy Show Quality (Gr.3, 1100m) at Randwick on August 20.
In addition to Group 1 goals, trainers Rob & Luke Price are considering two big-money targets this campaign. “She’s a real racehorse and has come back in great order,” Rob said. “We weren’t able to give her a long time off after Brisbane but that’s the life of a carnival horse.
“We’ve got to be conscious of where we place her. Randwick is her track and we’re mindful she does get back in her races. Winning a Group 1 is the dream for any owner or trainer but a mare is still sitting pretty at stud winning races like The Invitation or Golden Eagle.”
The $2million The Invitation (1400m) will be run at Randwick on October 22 and the $10million Golden Eagle (1500m) at Rosehill on October 29.
