Headwater didn’t break stride bridging the old and new seasons with his Victorian 3yo fillies Typhoon Titmus and Little Miss Kubi.
Typhoon Titmus will step straight into Group company following a professional debut on Monday and Little Miss Kubi was equally impressive winning first-up on Saturday.
Headwater’s stats for winners (79) and wins (122) were the best of any active third-season stallion in 2021-22. And if his first week of the current season is any guide, the Vinery sire is going to make massive inroads in 2022-23.
Typhoon Titmus cruised to a two-length victory in the Pakenham Memberships Maiden (1000m) on the first day of the season and will now tackle the $200,000 Quezette Stakes (Gr.3, 1100m) at Caulfield next Saturday, August 13.
Trainers Robbie Griffiths & Mat De Kock have no qualms about the steep rise in grade second time out. “Robbie & Mat think she will go a long way,” jockey Patrick Moloney said. “She trialled exceptionally well and I liked the way she relaxed and picked up Peter Moody’s mare (Extra Smart).
“I rode her mother to win down the straight at Flemington. She was good but had an attitude. This one is in a much better head space and is a quality filly.”
Typhoon Titmus is the second foal from Little Indian (Not A Single Doubt) and made $200,000 from Blue Gum Farm (as agent) at the 2021 Inglis Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale. Her older half-brother Hokolesqua (Star Turn) won at Mornington and Cranbourne for Team Hawkes last season. They were both bred by a Rupert Legh Racing syndicate and the mare’s latest foals are colts by NZ-bred stallions Grunt and Brutal.
Little Miss Kubi handled a Heavy 9 surface with aplomb in the Jockey Celebration Day Maiden (1000m) at Moe on Saturday. She was always travelling like a winner and scored running away by more than two lengths after letting down smoothly for Michael Poy.
Little Miss Kubi is trained by Cliff Brown for Vinery partner Greg Perry. Headwater sired her from Miss Eisenstadt (Manhattan Rain) whose only other named foal Big Me (Your Song) was sold to clients of Hong Kong trainer Caspar Fownes after winning a Tatura trial last season. Her second-dam Fritz’s Princess (More Than Ready) won the 2008 The Shorts (Gr.2, 1100m) at Randwick for Nick Moraitis.
Brown has spent the last twelve months building up his team on the Mornington peninsula after 12 years training in Singapore. His new-season 2yo team includes a Spirit Of Boom – Meow filly sold by Vinery (as agent) for $440,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in April.
Vinery stands Headwater for a $16,500 (inc GST) service fee. For bookings or further information, please contact Adam White (0414 800 918) or Harry Roach (0401 970 006).
