Newcastle trainer Nathan Doyle was confident Overriding was ready for a city debut after winning three-from-three at her home track this season.
Doyle selected an appropriate assignment in the Vinery Stallions Hcp (1300m) at Randwick on Saturday and the lightly-raced 3yo daughter of Vinery sire Star Turn was anything but overawed when still bailed up well into the straight.
Extricated in the nick of time by Koby Jennings, Overriding clicked into overdrive and motored home with a brilliant turn of foot to defeat Miss Hellfire (Hellbent) and Contemporary (Exceed And Excel). “Thankfully I was on a horse that can let down like that,” Jennings said. “Otherwise, I would have felt a bit silly.”
Overriding is a stable favourite and not just because of a 75% winning strike rate with the best to come. “She was passed in at the 2021 Adelaide Magic Millions,” Doyle recalled. “I liked the way she moved and went around and did a deal with Baramul Stud for $35,000.
“I ended up owning most of her but it’s turned out all right. So far, she’s earned over $180,000 and every time we step her out and gallop or race her she continues to improve, which is what you want to see.”
Her dam My Hussy (Hussonet) is a daughter of NZ-bred mare (It’s) Platonic (Trustful) who won a Cuddle Stakes (Gr.3, 1600m) at Trentham and a Summoned Stakes (LR, 1600m) at Sandown. She has an unraced 2yo filly named Sparklenglitter (All Too Hard) with trainers Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr).
Everyone’s A Star is another 3yo filly in winning form for Star Turn. Previously with Jeff Englebrecht, she was successful for local trainer Marc Chevalier and claiming apprentice Julia Presits in a Hawkesbury maiden a fortnight ago and can go back-to-back there this Thursday.
“It was her first start for the stable and it’s always nice to cheer home a winner at our home track,” Chevalier said. “Julia is such a talented rider and she’s been in white-hot form for us recently.”
Everyone’s A Star is raced by a syndicate managed by Dr Ulysses Crosson and she’s the third winner from as many to race from Pietra (Rock Of Gibraltar) who is owned by Denise Dunphy (Boeara Holdings).
Star Turn sired his 13th individual winner this month with 3yo gelding Eagledge on Monday. Vinery stands Star Turn for a $27,500 service fee (inc GST), payable on a live foal. For bookings or further information, contact Adam White (0414 800 918) or Harry Roach (0401 970 006).
