Vinery sire Star Turn had three first-crop colts make $140,000 during Book 1 of this week’s Inglis Classic Sale.

Inglis reported that all 17 of his Book 1 yearlings changed hands at the rainswept Riverside Stables between Sunday and Tuesday.

Caulfield trainer Mick Price bought one of Star Turn’s top-priced trio after chasing his colt from Empress Zakynthos (Lot 122) on Day 1.  “A speed on speed colt joins the stable,” Price declared.  “He’s one of the best sprinting colts in the sale!

Empress Zakynthos (Holy Roman Empire) won four times over 1100m around the Victorian provincial circuit and her brother Divine Ten was a short-course specialist in Hong Kong winning five sprints down the straight at Sha Tin.

The Star Turn – In The Moment colt (Lot 196) is also bred to go fast and at $140,000 was well-found by renowned judge Rick Worthington.  His NZ-bred dam won three times up to 1200m and she is a half-sister to Autumn Jeuney (MVRC Tesio Stakes Gr.3) and the dam of Brisbane flyer Little Brown Horse (Arcade Classic LR).

Sledmere Stud’s Star Turn – Sandcastles colt (Lot 429) sold to Hong Kong for $140,000 and their Star Turn – Draw Forward colt (Lot 107) made $80,000 to Belmont Bloodstock.  “He’s a powerhouse colt and will play a ‘Starring’ role for McEvoy Mitchell Racing,” agent Damon Gabbedy said.  “He’s out of a Charge Forward mare just like Sunlight and Golden Slipper winners She Will Reign & Estijaab.”

Trainer Tony McEvoy and Gabbedy were active at the Gold Coast Magic Millions last month and among their yearling buys was a $200,000 colt by More Than Ready.

Sledmere also has a link with the Vinery legend.  They sold More Than Ready Stakes winner Spring Heat for $240,000 at the 2016 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and she is coming off a Group 1 placing in the Telegraph Hcp at Trentham.

Vinery sire Headwater is blazing a trail with first-crop winners in town; Wisdom Of Water (Gold Coast), Mileva (Murray Bridge) and Aquagirl (Flemington) and trainers like Will Clarken and David Jolly joined the bandwagon at the Classic Sale.

They’re on board with a grey colt from French (Nadeem) that cost $180,000 from Twin Hills Stud.  “He’s the best physical type I’ve ever purchased at the Sales,” Clarken claimed.  “He’s closely related to Cazabillie who has great things in store this prep.”

Cazabillie is on a hat-trick for Clarken at Morphettville when she resumes from a spell.  The Headwater colt is also a half-brother to South African Stakes winner Infamous Fox (Foxwedge).

Laurel Oak Bloodstock manager Louis Mihalyka bought the Headwater – Skillz That Killz filly (Lot 470) for $75,000 that will be trained by Toby & Trent Edmonds.  He will also syndicate a filly by fellow Vinery sire Press Statement out of Fill Me Up (Lot 145) for $145,000.  She will be trained by Joe Pride.
