VINERY star Mossman sired the first and third placegetters in today’s G2 AJC Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick with the winner, Buffering, setting a new course record in the time honoured feature.
The Queenslander made light of his outside barrier zooming across to take up the running.
Buffering fought off a sustained challenge from San Domenico stakes winner Obsequious to win by nearly two-lengths with Kris Lees’ Mossman filly Parriwi a further length away in third.
Buffering has proven to be one of the strongest progeny of his sire having raced in three States at his last four starts finishing first or second at every one of them.
Trainer Robert Heathcote plans to return to Melbourne to contest the G1 Coolmore (1200m) at Flemington on Derby day.
“Finally,” Heathcote beamed. “We’ve run a lot of placings in these interstate ventures.”
“He did that in style and gee what a ride from Nash – he rated him a treat.”
“I thought the Darley team were going to do it to me for the third straight race – but we fought them off today and I’m very happy.”
“On top of that win we might stay in Sydney and give him another run in a couple of weeks and then go down (to Melbourne) and have a crack at that Coolmore (Stud Stakes),” he added.
Winning rider Nash Rawiller was full of praise for $22,000 Magic Millions purchase whose earnings passed the $500,000 inside just 10 starts.
“He’s still learning what the job is all about,” Rawiller said. “He was a bit green again today but he’s a horse who’s going forward,” he said.
“He makes his own luck and he’s got a high cruising speed.
“It was a good, tough effort and he’s a very nice horse.”
Part owned by former Socceroos Craig Moore, Scott Chipperfield and Zjelko Kalac, Buffering is proving to be a sensational buy for the footballing trio.
Purchased by NZ agent Paul Willetts for $22,000 at last years Magic Millions QTIS 600 sale, Buffering has now started just nine times for 6 wins and three placings and earning of over half a million dollars.
