Spicer Thoroughbreds maintained Press Statement’s average at more than 10 times his service fee with a $340,000 filly at the Magic Millions Yearling Sale on Friday.

Press Statement’s first 6 yearlings through the Gold Coast sale-ring have averaged $170,000.  He stands at Vinery for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee.

Brad Spicer took aim at the filly from Incredulous (Lot 679).  “I earmarked her early on and just had to have her,” he said after outlasting Shadwell Estates agent Angus Gold.  “She was high-priority but I was worried when Angus was on her, too.”

The Press Statement filly will be raced by the same owners as 2018 Victoria Derby Gr.1 winner Extra Brut.  “Aquis Farm has also kept a 25% interest,” Spicer continued.  “She reminded me of Commanding Jewel and we will give her every chance to come good for the classics.”

Commanding Jewel was bed by Vinery partner Greg Perry and Spicer raced her to a Thousand Guineas Gr.1 victory at Caulfield before she went amiss.

Press Statement commenced the Magic Millions with three fillies that made similar figures on Days 1 & 2.  Greg Hickman and Ferguson Bloodstock topped the trio at $180,000 while Champion Thoroughbreds and Bruce Mackenzie weighed in with $170,000 apiece.

Vinery’s other first-season sire Headwater was averaging over $97,500 on Friday evening – 6times his service fee.

The Headwaters have been targeted by astute judges with the colts from The Carnival ($180,000) and Academy Idol ($150,000) purchased by Hong Kong trainers Ricky You and Michael Chang, respectively.

Hong Kong-based George Moore paid $100,000 for the colt from Sydney winner Holder Sunset (Lot 657) and Matt Dale paid the same sum for the colt out of More Than Ready stakes performer Legislature (Lot 739).

Leading agents also mined the middle market for the first of the Headwaters.  Sheamus Mills Bloodstock bought the colt from Lonhro mare Amarichi for $90,000.  His dam won twice in Sydney and is from the family of Group 1 sire Magic Albert.

James Bester gave his vote of approval buying the Headwater – Vonzelle filly for $80,000.  The dam is an unraced Redoute’s Choice half-sister Group 1 sprinter Sudurka (VRC Salinger Stakes & MRC Oakleigh Plate).

And Blandford Bloodstock paid $70,000 for the colt from Regal Tier (Royal Academy) who hails from the family of Queensland stakes winners Tierqualo and Flamboyer.

Brisbane trainer Kelly Schweida bought the last Headwater to parade on Friday paying $105,000 for the colt from Magondo (Lot 777).  He was offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds – the same vendor as $180,000 Headwater – The Carnival colt on Wednesday.

“He’s a very nice colt and will keep coming on,” Schweida predicted.  “I liked him the first time I saw him on the grounds and I think he will go early.”
