TRAINER Neville Layt may have shed light on a whole new dimension surrounding talented gelding Red Excitement whose earnings sky-rocketed after his win in last Sunday’s Inglis Bonus (1200m) at Gosford.

A son of the Vinery resident Excites, Red Excitement’s triumph came despite the 3YO stepping straight from 1200m to a mile in the space of just nine days.

“This time in I have just sort of poked him along from short courses up to the 1200m and then I stepped his work up over the last nine days,” Layt explained.

“All the indications were was that he was going to run a strong 1600m which he did.”

Red Excitement has always shown above average ability and debuted with a 4.1-lens sixth behind Grand Slam winner and ruling Cox Plate favourite Pierro.

He also contested the Black Opal were he managed to finish 5-lens from the winner Epaulette.

“I was running him early in those better group and listed races over short courses but it might be that he is a better horse over more ground now,” Layt reckoned.

“He looks like he is going to make a nice middle distance horse. He’s only a three-year-old and he’s only had the 10 starts for three wins and a couple of placings now, so he could be a really nice horse in the future.”

Excites has already proven to sire a horse capable of stretching themsleves to a mile and upwards.

First crop son Flag Officer kicked off his career with an all the way over 1100m as a two-year-old but was later able to win a stakes race at 1600m and place fourth in the Group 2 WATC Derby (2400m).

Second crop son Red Excitement was purchased for $32,500 by popular duo Glenn and Viire Williams at the 2011 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale in Sydney.

His current earnings are $165,700.

The Williams’ have raced a string of quality horses led by 2011 Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner, Karuta Queen. who was also trained at Layt’s Queanbeyan lodgings.

Red Excitement, a great grandson of Bold Promise, is likely to target future Inglis Bonus races that make up part of the firm’s $5m races series.

“It’s terrific prizemoney and you don’t have to take on group horses and it’s good incentive for owners when they can pick up these types of cheques,” Layt said.
