Sydney owner-breeders Matthew Irwin and Peter Harris are on a winner with their Casino Prince filly Baccarat Baby.

As a matter of fact, Baccarat Baby equalled a record for Casino Prince when she won for the fourth time in a row at Doomben on Wednesday.  The Vinery stallion has been represented by 310 individual winners and his only other horse to string that many wins together has been Cantbuybetter.

The David Vandyke-trained filly will book a trip for the southern spring carnivals if she can make it five at Doomben on September 15.

“David reckons she’s a big chance of going places,” Irwin said shortly after Jag Guthmann-Chester guided Baccarat Baby to comfortable victory in the Smirnoff Hcp (1660m).  “She carried 59.5kg less the claim and seems to be getting better race by race.

“Peter and I basically breed to race and we’re delighted.”

“The only time she’s been beaten was first-up in a Doomben 2yo race back in February.  She ran third beaten a couple of lengths by Mishani Hustler and Plumaro and they both developed into stakes horses at the winter carnival.”

Baccarat Baby (3f Casino Prince – Meerlust by Johannesburg) is from a mare that Irwin and Harris bought for $20,000 at the Scone yearling sale.  “Sue Grills said she was city class after winning a Grafton maiden,” Irwin recalled.  “But she injured a knee and we retired her after five starts.

“Meerlust’s third dam Fanfreluche was the Eight Carat of North America.  She’s also the third dam of Flying Spur who sired Casino Prince.  We thought it would be worthwhile going for a double-cross to such an influential mare and so far it’s worked out perfectly.”

Harris is also having a good run with Vinery sires to his mare Gold Shears.  She foaled Golden Sheaf (Congrats) to win twice at Ipswich in June-July and Vandyke has nominated her younger sister Golden Mean to debut at Ipswich this Saturday.

Gold Shears has a yearling colt that has impressed everyone at Vinery.  He’s by Headwater and Harris booked the mare back to him last year.
