Mossman was on the main stage again on Tuesday when his super progressive sprinter Pedrena closed Melbourne Cup day with a Group 3 victory in the Maybe Mahal Stakes (1400m).

Pedrena is the 37th stakes winner by Mossman who nowadays covers limited books after a successful commercial career at Vinery.

The Mick Price-trained mare had been runner-up to Cool Passion in the Northwood Plume Stakes-Gr.3 at Caulfield last month but turned the tables with a narrow victory at Flemington.

“Mick has been a big supporter since I came across from New Zealand,” jockey Michael Dee said.  “I was his stable apprentice so to win a stakes race for him today is a huge thrill.  There’s a big group of owners in this mare and they’re on my side, too.”

Pedrena was a $60,000 buy at the 2015 Magic Millions national yearling sale and has earned $315,000 for a syndicate that includes Melbourne racing journalist Ben Asgari.

She was bred by the Esplin family from USA-bred mare Hansom Cab (Awesome Again), an unraced half-sister to Keeneland stakes winner Moments of Magic.  The Esplins also bred White Moss who was Mossman’s 36th stakes winner in The Nivison-Gr.3 at Randwick last month.

Mossman opens Flemington’s Victorian Oaks meeting with Another Bullseye in Race 1 on Thursday.  The Danny O’Brien-trained mare was runner-up to Falika at headquarters in September and the winner went on to complete a hat-trick at Moonee Valley.
