Cantbuybetter is proof positive you can’t keep a good horse down…just ask Darling Downs trainer Ben Currie.

He had been overdue to break through at black-type level and finally rose to the occasion in the BRC Members Hcp-LR (1600m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Casino Prince had a red letter day yesterday with two new Stakes horses.  Cantbuybetter is the 14th stakes winner by Vinery sire Casino Prince.  “He’s one of my favourites and there are more stakes races to come!” a pumped-up Currie predicted.  “No horse deserves it more and a big thanks to Jeff Lloyd for an outstanding ride.

“He’s a big horse and may have been a bit soft last time in the Tails Stakes but we made certain he was ready to race at his best today.”

Despite drawing wide, he crossed the field and then stalked Sheiswhatsheis before cutting the corner to score by two lengths.  “The filly always ensures the speed is on and that suited him,” Lloyd said.  “He was in a good rhythm and took advantage when she rolled off the rails.”

Casino Prince sired the winner from Lingerie Girl (Xaar) who is a half-sister to the dam of stakes winners Tenant’s Tiara (AJC Eskimo Prince Stakes-LR) and Zoutenant (Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic-LR).

Cantbuybetter won his first four starts at Toowoomba (2), Gold Coast and Doomben but didn’t capitalize last year.

“He’s a big horse and may have been a bit soft last time in the Tails Stakes,” Currie added.  “He’s potentially the best I’ve ever trained and I’ve never lost faith even though there have been problems along the way.”

A bargain $40,000 buy for Jeb Racing at the 2013 Magic Millions HIT Sale, he has won 8 races in 23 starts for earnings of $240,000.

Casino Prince also sired Roselli Sting to win the $100,000 Autumn Series Final (1400m) at Morphettville on Saturday.  And his promising 2yo Casino Fourteen earned minor black-type when beaten in a three-way finish to the South Australian Sires’ Produce Stakes-Gr.3.

Trainer Robert Smerdon has his Casino Prince sprinter Hooked ticking over nicely for a trip to Adelaide.  A last-start Group 3 winner at Caulfield, he heads interstate for the R A Lee Stakes-Gr.3 next weekend after an 8 length trial win at Cranbourne on Monday.

Casino Prince is armed for a career-best season following 104 individual winners of $4.57 million in 2015-16.  With time on his side, there’s been 94 winners of $3.80 million so far this term.

The prolific winner-getter stands at Vinery for an $11,000 (inc gst) service fee.
