All Too Hard filly Daunting Duchess defied a dramatic drift in betting to win eased down at Murwillumbah on Tuesday (January 2nd).

Having her first start for Eagle Farm trainer Bryan Dais, she blew from $14 to $34 in fixed-odds markets but was always travelling like a winner in the Kingscliff Beach Club Maiden (1200m).

Settled behind the speed by visiting Victorian apprentice Boris Thornton, the debutante took advantage of a rails run on the corner and pinched a break in the straight to win by a length.

“She’s a really nice filly and flew the gates in her trials at Doomben and Deagon,” Dais said.  “We’ve given her time and the only worry was whether she would be ready to win first-up over 1200m.”

Daunting Duchess was a $65,000 buy from Baramul Stud at the 2016 Gold Coast Magic Millions.  Her dam Go Kate Go (More Than Ready) had also won on debut at Gosford for Gerry Harvey in October 2011.

Go Kate Go is a half-sister to Randwick stakes winner Kakakakatie (Zeditave) whose foals include recent All Too Hard winner Darhad.

Baramul has catalogued a Sebring – Kakakakatie colt as Lot 2 for the Gold Coast Magic Millions next Wednesday morning and the mare foaled an All Too Hard filly in October.

All Too Hard stands at Vinery Stud and the first of his 33 yearlings at the Gold Coast Magic Millions is Baramul Stud’s filly from Gai Waterhouse Classic-LR winner Kryptelon (Lot 8).

Thornton, who is on loan to Brian Smith at Eagle Farm, was impressed with Daunting Duchess.  “She’s well-educated and I was able to give her the run of the race.  She has a lovely attitude and feels like a professional filly.”
