MOSSMAN

A group one winner by the extremely successful Success Express, Mossman has made a tremendously promising start from limited opportunities, and has his best bred crops to run.

Mossman’s affinity for established Australian sire lines is demonstrated by his group two winners Segments and Pure Energy, who are out of a mare bred on a Bletchingly/Sir Tristram cross. Bletchingly line horses include Best Western, Biscawong, Brave Warrior (and his son Show a Heart), Canny Lad, Lord Ballina, Star Watch, Hurricane Sky, and Take Your Partners. Mossman also has black-type winner Mosstang out of a mare by Zephyr Zip (by Zephyr Bay), like Bletchingly, from the Biscay branch of the Star Kingdom line. Other branches of the Star Kingdom line that have worked under Success Express include Kaoru Star, his sons, Luskin Star and Full On Aces, and grandson Covetous; and Semipalatinsk (broodmare sire of Savannah Success by Success Express).

Mossman is the sire of Our Sweet Moss, a group two winner, and five-time black-type scorer, out of a mare by Straight Strike, a son of Mr. Prospector.  Bellotto, Woodman (sire of Timber Country and Hector Protector), Umatilla (broodmare sire of a stakes placed horse by Mossman), Zafonic (by Gone West, also sire of Elusive Quality), Street Cry, Thunder Gulch (who might work particularly well), and Lujain and Secret Savings (by Seeking the Gold) are all representatives of the Mr. Prospector sireline that appeal with Mossman.

Mossman also has a pedigree that invites Northern Dancer line mares. Particularly good should be additional strains of Nijinsky II (including through Royal Academy, and Tights, both broodmare sires of group one winners by Success Express, and through Strawberry Road). The Minstrel (sire of Palace Music, Masterclass and Bakharoff; grandsire of Naturalism), and Storm Bird, sire of Bluebird (sire of Dolphin Street), and Storm Cat, who has several sons who stood in Australia, including Tale of the Cat (who should be particularly good here), Hennessy, Giant’s Causeway, Catrail, High Yield, and Van Nistelrooy).

From the Danehill line, mares by the full brothers Danewin and Commands would be particularly interesting as they tie-in closely with Mossman’s female line. Lomond, Be My Guest and Fairy King (brother to Sadler’s Wells, three-parts-brother to Perugino) are other Northern Dancer line horses who have worked under Success Express so we can see mares by the likes of Exceed and Excel (out of a Lomond mare), Encosta de Lago and Testa Rossa having superior results with Mossman

Mossman’s third dam, No Relation, is closely related to the dam of the great mare Eight Carat, which invites the previously mentioned Danewin and Commands, and from Sir Tristram line, Octagonal, his son Lonhro, Kaapstad and Don Eduardo also look promising. There are also Success Express line stakes winners out of mares by Sir Tristram himself and his son, Military Plume. It could also be worth introducing this line through Marauding, Grosvenor, Sovereign Red and Zabeel.
