Sir Charleston freewheeled to an Australian first for his sire Congrats (USA) on Sunday.

The Richard Jolly trained youngster was never headed on the way to a two-length victory in the Coopers Clear Maiden Plate (1100m) at Gawler. He had been run down on debut at Murray Bridge earlier this month.

Sir Charleston landed the first Australian win for his sire a fortnight after Congrats filly Commiserate was stakes placed in the LR Oaklands Plate at Morphettville. “He’s got ability and will make it in town, no worries,” Jolly said. “I knew he would improve second-up – he got lost and didn’t let down at Murray Bridge.”

Sir Charleston cost $80,000 at the 2014 NZ National yearling sale. “I was over there with a breeders tour when he was paraded at Westbury Stud,” Jolly recalled. “I was impressed and liked him again at Karaka.”

Congrats stands at Vinery and sired Sir Charleston from Sydney winner Dancesteps (Danehill). Second-dam Cannyanna (Canny Lad) won three Listed sprints at Flemington and was also Group 1 placed in the 1999 Salinger Stakes.

Jolly also prepares Congrats filly Compliment who ran fifth at Morphettville in March. “She’s in the paddock now and goes alright,” he said. “Congrats got them up-and-running early in America but they look three year-olds to me.”

Congrats will have 16 yearlings for sale at the Magic Millions National Sale from June 2 to June 4. Baramul Stud has catalogued a brother to Commiserate (Lot 2032) and a filly from G3 Southern Cross Stakes winner Heart Testa (Lot 2129).
