AUSTRALIAN export Gold Alloy (4g Testa Rossa) made it five straight wins in Macau with an all-the-way win in the Macau Guineas (MAC Gr.1, 1500m) on Sunday, writes Harry Troy on the Macau Jockey Club website (23 Mar 15).

Ridden by regular jockey Horace Lam and trained by K C Chong (Chong Stables), the New Zealand-bred was fired out of the gates to lead and was then rated to perfection by Lam, before kicking away at the 200 metre mark. Bo Bo So Cute (Savabeel) finished strongly under Andrew Calder but Gold Alley had enough left to repel the challenge and win by a short head. Golden Idol (Choisir) and Ryan Curatolo finished third, a further three lengths back.

Gold Alloy has been impressively consistent on the all weather surface, winning four races straight, with Sunday’s race his first attempt on turf in Macau.

Formerly trained in Australia by David Hayes, Gold Alloy was raced by Gerry Harvey for six starts in Victoria.  Gold Alloy has blossomed in Macau and the strong 4YO has now earned owner Lee Yuen Fat close to HK$1,200,000 in prizemoney.

Winning jockey Horace Lam admits having some concerns about the turf with Gold Alloy early on but a nice trial effort by the gelding two weeks ago gave connections the confidence to tackle the Guineas.

“He trailed okay without being outstanding and I felt he would go well but I was not overconfident and I was very frightened of the 3YO Bo Bo So Cute.” Lam said. “We were lucky with a good draw and they left me alone in front, so he was able to kick away in the straight and luckily, we could just hold on.”

Lam is confident Gold Alloy will run out the 1800m of the Derby given his strong win over 1600m on the sand. “He was very strong over 1600 when I won on him so if we get a good draw in the Derby and don’t have to work too much, he must be hard to beat and luckily Bo Bo So Cute cannot run in the Derby.”

Gold Alloy has now won five of his 11 career starts and been placed a further two times. He is the only winner out of the placed mare Camouflaged (Strategic) who is a half sister to three winners being out of the winner Secover (Danehill), herself a half sister to the Gr.2 winner Light Up The World (Rory’s Jester). This is also the family of the triple Gr.1 winner Bentley Biscuit (Peintre Celebre) and the Gr.1 winning Champion sire Thorn Park (Spinning World).

Chong Stables also prepare Macau’s best all round galloper Wonder Mossman (Mossman) and the sand specialist Leisure Free (Testa Rossa).

Testa Rossa shuttled to France in the Northern Hemisphere’s 2003 and 2004 breeding seasons. He has 112 runners and 82 winners in the Northern Hemisphere, giving him a phenomenal  73.3% winners to runners ratio. Gold Alloy becomes Testa Rossa’s fourth stakes winner in Macau and 18th stakes winner in the Northern Hemisphere.
