Promising Perth youngster Tonto notched the first win for Vinery sire Onemorenomore on Wednesday.
Tonto (2g Onemorenomore – Grier Garsonne by Arena) is trained by Lou and Dion Luciani and he came from last in a capacity field to mow down the leaders in the Judy Maker Memorial (1200m) at Pinjarra.
“He went well at Ascot first-up and again a fortnight ago but we thought 1200 metres might have been a bit sharp today,” Dion Luciani said. “But he’s obviously more precocious than the rest of his family.”
The Luciani father-son team prepare Tonto for Amelia Park’s Peter Walsh and owner-breeders Colin Hounsell and Colin Crossley. They were thinking of backing him up in the G3 WATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on Saturday week – it’s worth $200,000 – but that race may come a slightly too early.
“It was on the cards but he’s a nice horse for the future and we’ve decided to give him more time between runs. There’s a 1600 metre race at Ascot on April 26 and then he will likely be spelled until the spring.”
Tonto is a younger half-brother to LR WATC Melvista Stakes (2200m) winner Lethal Jones. Sadly, Hounsell and Crossley lost their dam Grier Garsonne last September.
Onemorenomore was a Group 1 winning 2YO in the 2009 Champagne Stakes (1600m) at Randwick. He is a son of Vinery foundation sire Red Ransom and stood for $13,200 (inc gst) last year.
His yearlings have sold up to $175,000 this year and he has another well-bred colt catalogued for the Inglis Easter Sale next Thursday. From the Lonhro mare Withoutme (Lot 482), he is related to Group 1 winners Shinzig and Strada.
