EXCITES mare Minh Khai made light work of her rivals and a delivered considerable boost to her broodmare value at the same time when she scored a comfortable win in today’s ATC Hyland Race Colours Handicap (2200m) at a sodden Warwick Farm.

The John Steinmetz owned and trained mare was poised to strike tracking the speed before laying down the gauntlet to those ahead of her streaking away to in the stretch to win by 2.8-lens.

It was the mare’s fourth win together with her five placings and a suitable reward for some forward planning on her trainer’s behalf.
”We kept her in the bush for a little while – I thought I’d wait for one of these days, a wet track at WF and it was worth it,” Steinmetz explained.
”She just tries really hard and never puts a bad run in ever – a couple of bad rides over that period – but she’s never let us down.
She’s a terrific little mare for us. If I had more like her than I wouldn’t have to work,” he quipped.

Aside from being a daughter of the up and coming young sire Excites, Minh Khai is superbly related on her distaff line being out of a Grand Lodge three-quarter-sister to Group 1 winner Freemason who earned his major at the expense of dual Cox Plate winner Northerly in an unforgettable BMW Stakes on 2003 Golden Slipper day.

Other notable Woodlands/Darley stakeswinner in Minh Khai’s immediate family include Santissima, Serenissima, Asarka, Bradshaw, Tarzi, Mental, Debrief, Undue, Absurd, Beaded and Rarefied.

Other significant horses on the page are Rosehill Guineas winner Solar Circle and Malibu Magic who beat her stablemate Tristanagh in the 1989 Magic Millions on the Gold Coast.

Minh Khai was bought by Steinmetz at the 2010 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.
