BIG BROWN star Darwin will use the race won by Australia’s own So You Think to catapult him to his first Group 1 success in Europe next month.
The Pennsylvanian bred colt is in line to become trainer Aidan O’Brien’s eighth winner of the prestigious Irish Champion Stakes (2012m) alongside the likes of High Chaparral, Giant’s Causeway, Dylan Thomas and 2011 winner So You Think.
Darwin was purchased by Coolmore for US$1.3 million when he topped the 2012 Fasig Tipton Ready To Run sale of two-year-olds in Florida making him the most expensive 2YO sold in the USA in that year.
Trained firstly by Hall Of Famer Todd Pletcher, Darwin was an impressive debut winner at Belmont Park in New York before being injured when finishing fourth in the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes in November.
He was subsequently transferred to Coolmore’s European HQ at Ballydoyle and made an immediate impact by posting an emphatic win in the Group 3 The Minstrel Stakes on June 26 at Naas.
The winner of the Irish Champion Stakes earns automatic qualification for the Breeders Cup Turf staged in November each year in the United States.
