Consistent money-spinners like Cogliere are the backbone of any stable and that was evident when he won the South Grafton Cup (1610m) on Sunday.

Trainer Marc Quinn paid tribute to the 4yo gelding after he defeated race favourite Brazen to break through $300,000 in prizemoney.  “It’s my first feature win at the Grafton carnival and it’s just awesome,” Quinn said.  “He’s always been a really good horse for us and was cherry-ripe today.”

The son of Vinery sire Pluck (USA) turned the tables on Brazen after going down a couple of lengths at their last meeting in the Wauchope Cup.  “I knew he would be hard to hold out once we settled in the first four,” jockey Matt McGuren admitted.  “The 2kg turnaround in the weights also made me pretty confident.”

Cogliere was bred and sold by Holbrook Thoroughbreds for $22,000 at the 2015 Inglis Classic Summer Book.  He’s owned by a syndicate that includes Johnny Scott who raced horses with Marc’s father Pat Quinn.  Pluck got him from Final Star (Delago Brom), a half-sister to the dam of Melbourne Group 3 winners Nediym’s Glow (General Nediym) and Red Colossus (Testa Rossa).

Quinn will target more county cups with Cogliere including the Sawtell Cup (1500m) on July 22 and Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) on August 2.

Pluck is a Top 10 sire among Australia’s third-season stallions with earnings of $1.79 million this season.  His chief earner Plucky Girl won the Tamworth Cup prior to a black-type placing in the Gai Waterhouse Classic LR at Ipswich last month.

Vinery stands Pluck alongside his sire More Than Ready for a $6,600 (inc GST) service fee.
