Vinery Stud’s recent run of black-type winners continued in Adelaide on Saturday when Bonvicini was a class above the locals in the $100,000 Morphettville Guineas LR.

The Vinery born and bred filly is the 20th Stakes winner by former Vinery sire Myboycharlie (Ire) and was reared for Vinery’s draft to the 2018 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale before owner/breeder Greg Perry decided to retain her.  And it’s no wonder Ciaron Maher was chosen as her trainer.

Myboycharlie mare Jameka helped put Maher on the map with Group 1 wins in the 2015 VRC Oaks, 2016 Caulfield Cup and 2017 The BMW.

Maher and co-trainer David Eustace weren’t in Adelaide but sent specific instructions across to jockey Jake Toeroek.  “I was told she was a nice filly and it didn’t matter where we lobbed – as long as I got her into a rhythm,” he said after weighing in.  “She did get worked up behind the gates but they went quick and she settled perfectly.”

Bonvicini (3f Myboycharlie – Orvieto by Testa Rossa) speared through a gap in the straight and then drew clear to score by almost two lengths from Silent Sovereign (Dalakhani).  “She hit the front at the furlong and then pricked her ears,” Toeroek added.  “There was a lot left in the tank.

“She was really strong late and it was an impressive effort over 1600m.  They said she was a nice horse and she proved that right!”

Bonvicini was racing for just the third time when stepping up to Listed level on the road.  She won at Ballarat on debut in July and now looks destined to stay at home for the Melbourne spring carnival.

Godolphin star Exhilarates (Snitzel) heads Vinery’s 3yo filly graduates with several Group 1 options in September and October.  So does Bonvicini’s 3yo stablemate Kooweerup.  The More Than Ready filly has pleased Maher since a first-up placing at Moonee Valley last month and she holds a Group 1 nomination for the Thousand Guineas at Caulfield on October 12.

Bonvicini races for Vinery partner Greg Perry, whose racing entity is Greenwich Stud, and is the first foal from Vinery resident mare Orvieto who won at Geelong (2) and Kyneton for trainer Mick Price.  Her second is a yearling colt by All Too Hard.

Bonvicini was broken in at Vinery Stud in the same crop as boom colt Exceedance so she becomes the Vinery breaker’s second Stakes winner in as many weeks from that group.
