TWO of Big Brown’s second crop two-year-olds earned themselves more black-type and rich pickings over the weekend in the USA.

First to go was the Tim Ice trained Mighty Brown who managed to beat all bar the promising colt Rise Up in Sunday’s $200,000 Jean Lafitte Stakes at Delta Downs.  Mighty Brown loomed three wide around the turn but couldn’t catch leader Rise Up in the stretch with 7 1/4-lens back to Flat Gone in third place.

Still a maiden, it was Mighty Brown’s fifth placnig from six starts.   The filly went within three-quarters of a length of winning a Stakes race two starts ago when second in the $100,000 Sunday Silence Stakes on turf at Louisiana Downs.  Now Stakes placed twice in six start on two surfaces, Mighty Brown is set to break through soon.

Coincidentially, her recent placing is the same race and finishing position filled by first crop Big Brown colt, Brown Almighty, who happens to be a stablemate of Mighty Brown.

Later on, up and comer Alpaca Fina clocked in third in the $100,000 Sharp Cat Stakes L (6.5f) at Belmont Park in New York, the scene of her sire’s epic 2008 win in the Preakness.

Alpaca Fina was having just her second race start having won impressively on debut at the same venue last month.

Big Brown is closing on a milestone of 50 winners from his first two crops including 11 stakes-performers from 85 starters (12.9%).
