Mick Price has unearthed another promising three year-old by Vinery sire Myboycharlie in Melbourne.
The Price-trained Googly Gander looked a very progressive colt winning the Mitchelton Wines Plate (1506m) by five lengths at Benalla on Sunday. On the strength of that performance, his next start will be in a 3YO Benchmark race over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Wednesday week, October 16.
Myboycharlie’s headline colt Charlie Boy has drawn perfectly in barrier 3 for the G1 Caulfield Guineas this Saturday. He was a first-up winner of the G2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) and was running on nicely last time out in the G3 Guineas Prelude (1400m).
Vinery sire All Too Hard won last year’s Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on the way to Champion 3YO honours in 2012-13.
Googly Gander (3c Myboycharlie – Dorothy Dinosaur by Canny Lad) is a homebred for Dave Douglas and Price’s racing manager Matt Finn. “He didn’t handle the heavy track at all second up and Stephen Baster said he was always travelling like the winner in the better going on Sunday with the blinkers on for the first time,” Finn explained.
“We will monitor him over the coming days and all going well, will give him his chance in an $80,000 race here at Caulfield on Thousand Guineas day.”
Douglas and Finn will donate 20% of winning prizemoney to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. “We like Myboycharlie and so does Mick,” Finn said. “Googly Gander is his first colt in the stable but Mick targeted them at the yearling sales earlier this year and now we have four on the books.
“Mick was really impressed with the stallion when he saw him for the first time at Vinery.”
Googly Gander is a younger half-brother to LR Canberra Cup winner Fill The Page and will continue to improve as he matures with more racing. His owners were due for a change of luck after their mare Dorothy Dinosaur lost her latest foal last week.
Myboycharlie is Irish bred son of Danetime and was named Champion French 2YO in 2007. He is standing for a $16,500 (inc gst) fee at Vinery this year.
