THE Barry Campbell trained Admiral confirmed his status as Tasmania’s best two-year-old when cruising to victory in the $100,000 Listed Motors Elwick Stakes over 1100 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on Sunday.
Admiral (Mossman-Reunification) missed the start and was forced to play catch-up with the field and rider Brendon McCoull opted to send him three and four-wide with cover in an attempt to get into the race from the 700-metre peg.
Admiral becomes his sire’s 27th Stakes winner and looks to have more in store over the Autumn.
Interstate invader Hennessy Rock (Craig Newitt) found the lead turning for home with Geegees Doublejay hot in pursuit but Admiral was still three lengths off them and the widest runner on straightening.
But when McCoull called on Admiral for the big effort 150 metres out he dug deep and cruised to a comfortable win over Geegees Goldengirl that was at big odds with her stablemate Geegees Doublejay a close-up third ahead of Hennessy Rock from the David Hayes stable.
Admiral won on debut in Hobart and followed up with a third to Geegees Doublejay before being sent for a short break.
He resumed with blinkers on for the first time in the Alfa Bowl and reversed the outcome over Geegees Doublejay.
But this latest effort set him apart from the rest and trainer Barry Campbell was thrilled with the performance.
