PETER’S FLYING NEVERLAND

Big Brown filly Neverland overcame a slow start to charge home for a comfortable debut victory in the XXXX Gold Maiden (1400m) at Northam on Monday.

The promising stayer was pushed along early by William Pike to keep in touch as the leaders Star Bay and Just Jaffa set a cracking pace.  The winner clocked a sharp 1.22.33s and finished off the final 600m in 33.19s .

Neverland (3f Big Brown – Midnight Special by Zabeel) is a homebred for Bob and Sandra Peters – they paid $210,000 for her dam at the 2007 Sydney Easter Yearling Sale.

“I bought Midnight Special because of her pedigree,” Peters told WA Newspapers columnist Robert Edwards.  “She wasn’t particularly correct but I liked her and took a punt.

“I have thought all of the way through that Neverland is a real staying filly.  Big Brown was a phenomenal racehorse and his stock just need a bit of time.”

Neverland hails from the family of Star Of Nouvelle who Wally Mitchell prepared to win the LR Queen’s Plate at Ascot before travelling to Sydney to claim the G2 Riesling Stakes.

Midnight Special foaled Neverland first-up and Peters has mated her with Vinery stallions every year since then.  The nine-year-old mare has a yearling filly by red hot stallion Myboycharlie and a colt at foot by Champion 3yo All Too Hard.

Big Brown (USA) also sired promising debut winner Military Angel in Ireland on Monday and another of his first-starters could salute at Randwick next Monday when Gai Waterhouse unveils her ‘black-book” galloper Big Clipper.

Vinery stands Big Brown for a $16,500 (inc gst) service fee.
