WATABOUT THE WIN?!

Corumbene Stud owner George Altomonte bred his latest More Than Ready winner at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Watabout (2f More Than Ready – Wasimah by Danehill) sat three-wide but refused to surrender in the TAB Number 1 Club Maiden Plate (1100m).  Backing up after an encouraging debut at Gosford last month, she defeated Amanpour by a half-head after a rousing duel in the straight.

“She fought back and just got there,” winning jockey Glyn Schofield said.  “She’s still a bit green and let the other one push into the clear .  My filly is tenacious and took a lot of benefit from that first-up effort.”

Altomonte bred More Than Ready’s 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring and 2012 Canonbury Stakes winner Raceway.  They were both out of mares by Danehill sire Flying Spur and both were raced by Star Thoroughbreds.

The More Than Ready – Danehill cross has produced 11 stakes winners and the More Than Ready – Flying Spur combination is up to 7 stakes winners.

Wednesday’s Canterbury result comes at the end of a massive season for Altomonte.  Besides winning the G1 Golden Slipper with Overreach, he has also won stakes races with Bennetta (G2 Light Fingers Stakes) and Ichihara (LR Gosford Guineas).

Watabout has a pedigree that will continue to pay dividends for her owner when she eventually retires to stud.  She is from a three-quarter sister to G3 sprinter Kaphero and second dam Kapchat was a G1 winner of the STC Winfield Classic.

Vinery champion More Than Ready has already gone past his PB in the Australian winner and wins category with six weeks of this season remaining.

Watabout took his tally to 122 winners of 188 races which betters his previous marks of 115 winners (2010) and 184 wins (2011).

More Than Ready (USA) will stand for a $99,000 (inc gst) service fee at Vinery in 2013.
