DOWDSTOWN CHARLIE IN GROUP ONE

IT’S been a big week for Vinery Stud stallion Myboycharlie and it could be about to become huge as the freshman closes in on a potential first Group 1 winner this weekend.

The grandson of Danehill was represented by two UK winners in the space of a few days beginning with Dermot Weld’s Glory Boy who won in Ireland.

He was followed by Myboycharlie colt Howz The Family who took out a 1200m event at Ripon on Wednesday.

Those two winners came in the wake of Myboycharlie’s first northern-hemisphere winner – Salai – who won at Deauville in France last month.

Myboycharlie has a habit of similtanous winners – the weekend of May 25/26 saw two of his progeny triumph in Australia and across in South Africa.

His local winner was none other than Dowdstown Charlie who came from last to score a tremendous win at Randwick over the 1200m.

Such was the strength of the effort, trainer David Payne had no hesitation in whisking the $140,000 Magic Millions Yearling purchase off to Brisbane for tomorrow’s Group 1 BRC J.J. Atkins Stakes (1600m).

“We decided roll the dice,” Payne said.

“He came through his last race so well we thought we would give him a chance at the Group One. And if it’s wet, that brings him right into the race.

“We will give him a break in Queensland after Saturday so he can have a spell with the sun on his back and come back for the spring.”
