SPRING CHAMPION AND BREEDERS GET EXCITED

KARUTA Queen’s trainer Neville Layt believes talented Excites youngster, Red Excitement has the necessary to speed and quality to overcome his horror draw and take out the prestigious Listed $100,000 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Red Excitement will start from 12 in the 13 horse field making his task a much harder one than it ought to be.

”Mate I couldn’t win an argument with the barriers if I tried,” an exasperated Layt said.

”Red Excitement has a lot of gate speed which will help him, I’d rather come out of one than 12, but that’s where I’ve drawn and that’s where I’ve got to come out of.”

Red Excitement, purchased for $32,500 at the 2011 Inglis Classic Yearling sale, showed uncommon pace to lead his 900m trial at Canterbury on September 19 before being reeled in late by Darley colt Knoydart (More Than Ready – Regal Cheer).

”He went very good and has improved out of sight since the trial,” Layt said.

”He has a beautiful pedigree, his third dam is Bold Promise (dam of Golden Slipper winner Merlene) and for a horse who is something like 16 hands and is all legs – he goes quite good.

”If he jumps and everything goes his way, I expect him to win.

”If he goes all right tomorrow, he’ll head down to Melbourne for the $250,000 Inglis Bonus at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate day.”

Red Excitement is a member of Excites’ second crop, his first heralded five individual 2YO winners (from 13 starts) including crack Queensland filly Amber’s Crown who four of her six starts and collected more than $200,000 for owner Joe Rapisarda.

Meanwhile another first crop Excites and Queensland compatriot Black Jag chases Group 1 success this weekend when he lines-up in the Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).

”Black Jag finished fourth in the Dulcify which was a great source of encouragement for him to run a strong 2000m given that it was the first time he’d been past a mile,” Vinery’s Adam White said.

”Excites’ sire Danewin shares the 2000m Rosehill course record 1:59.99 with Octagonal and was famously unlucky not to have the VRC and AJC Derbies.”
