HUSSOUSA CLAIMS GIMCRACK FOR HUSSON

The new two-year-old season is under way in Sydney with the John Thompson-trained Hussousa victorious in the Listed Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on Saturday.

The recent Canterbury trial winner lived right up to her recent public debut when scoring a runaway victory over Queensland filly Snipzu with Jade Marauder in third.

Hussousa showed natural speed to be prominent in the early stages before booting through to share the lead from the top of the straight.

When the field topped the rise, Singapore-based Brazilian jockey Joao Moreira gave Hussousa her head and the grey filly strode away to record a comprehensive win.

“She’s just a nice filly,” Moreira said. “She jumped well and relaxed.

“She made things pretty easy for me.”

Thompson indicated Hussousa was likely to head to the paddock for a well-deserved spell before she returns later in the season with races like the Blue Diamond and Golden Slipper on the agenda.

“We’ll see how she pulls up but I daresay she’ll go for a spell,” Thompson said.

The two favoured runners in on-course betting, Kyria and My Shabella, failed to figure for different reasons.

My Shabella was a late scratching after hitting her head in the barriers while Kyria made up some ground in the straight and finished fifth.

“She’s had enough,” Kyria’s jockey Brenton Avdulla said.
