Vinery sire All Too Hard completed a 3yo running double of contrasting styles at Sale on Sunday.
SIR KALAHAD gave veteran jockey Brian Werner a torrid ride in the NJT 20 Cricket Maiden (1100m) while All Hard Wood provided Jamie Mott with the run of the race in the KHQ Lawyers Maiden (1400m).
“I rode him on one rein around the corner and all he wanted to do was hang out down the straight,” Werner said after getting Sir Kalahad home on debut for trainer Doug Harrison. “He’s raw and is doing lots of things wrong. We’ve been working to rectify a very high head carriage with a tongue-tie and noseband – I guess a shadow-roll is the next option.
“But if he goes straight, Doug has a lot to work with going forward.”
His dam Kalamata (Desert Prince) won a stakes winner at Wanganui and was Group 1 placed at Hastings. Her first foal to race Stirling Grove (Mossman) won the SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes Gr.3 and she foaled a colt by Vinery sire Headwater in September.
ALL HARD WOOD was also facing the starter for the first time and he was a straightforward winner for trainer Richard Laming. “He’s a well-educated colt and I was able to sit one-out, one-back,” Mott reported. “He had them covered once I gave him clear air although he did float about once we got to the front. But that was just inexperience and it was a very good win.”
All Too Hard sired him from Irish-bred mare Wood Lane (Sadler’s Wells) who won the Prix des Brueres (2200m) in France. She’s a sister to stakes winners Moon Queen (Longchamp) and Rostropovich (Leopardstown) and landed here after making 340,000gns (AUD 840,705) at the Tattersalls December Sale.
All Too Hard’s yearlings sold to $500,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions. Overall, 16 lots averaged $141,000 to buyers like Hoss Heinrich, David Hayes, Chris Waller, Danny O’Brien and James Bester.
There are 4 All Too Hard yearlings at the NZB Karaka Yearling Sale starting next weekend. Vendors will be banking on his top-class colt Demonetization winning again at Pukekohe on Friday.
All Too Hard has another 17 lots entered for the Inglis Classic Sale starting on February 10.
